Time is running out for Brian Daboll

Pearl had a plan. Rays sale approved.

Good morning, all! I hope your Tuesday is a great one!

Time is running out for New York Giants coach Brian Daboll. He has three games left to turn it around or it is time for this once, proud, signature NFL franchise to move on from this regime. I explain it all in the video.

Here are some other thoughts, as we enter an exciting week of baseball:

  • There is a reason Bruce Pearl retired as Auburn men’s basketball coach now and not when the season ended in the spring. So his son, Steve, could get the job. This is not an unusual circumstance. When high profile coaches want a hand in their successor and not leave it to a search committee, they wait until the last second to step down. See Jim Calhoun and Kevin Ollie, if you want a referral. That is why Pearl, 65, retired on Monday. There is nothing more to it than that.

  • As far as I am concerned, the MLB playoffs have started. With so much on the line in this final week of the regular season, with just about every game critical, you might as well say the post season is underway.

  • It is official. The ACC has voted to mandate all its football teams play ten Power 4 teams per season, including nine from the conference. More details are to be determined. Translation: other Power 4 conferences were doing it. The ACC had to follow suit.

  • MLB has unanimously approved the sale of the Tampa Bay Rays to a group headed by real estate developer Patrick Zalupski for $1.7B. Word is the deal does not include the team relocating to another region, meaning the Rays will build a new stadium in the Tampa Bay area.

  • Playing all their games at the 10,046-seat George M. Steinbrenner Field this season, the Rays ended up selling out 61 of their 81 home games. Their total attendance was 786,750. That turned out to be an average of 9,713 per game. Considering the roof was torn off the Trop, the Rays made the best out of a bad situation.

  • In case you are wondering, the Rays have had the seventh-best winning percentage of any MLB team over the last ten years, beating out big money market clubs like the Mets and Red Sox.

That is going to do it for today’s newsletter. Thank you for subscribing and have a terrific day!
