The Masters goes Prime

NFL numbers off the charts. Pressure on college coaches

Good morning, all! It’s hump day!

Even The Masters golf tournament has come to the realization the times, they are a changing. Acknowledging how sports fans are consuming their information, the venerable tournament has cut a deal with Amazon Prime to stream. That’s right, I wrote stream, with partial coverage of the first two rounds now a reality.

In the video, I break down more details of the coverage and how The Masters, although tipping its cap to technology, is not giving up an inch of control.

Here are some other thoughts, as I watch the Yankees bullpen pour more gasoline on the fire:

  • That Yankees bullpen, incidentally, has a 12.58 ERA in its last eight games.

  • By the way, the Toronto Blue Jays are going to win the A.L. East, a prediction I made in May and one for which I was criticized, when the Yankees were in first place. That first note was one reason I was not confident the defending AL champions would repeat.

  • It’s only Week 2 but the NFL television ratings are already off the charts. Sunday afternoon’s Super Bowl rematch between Philadelphia and Kansas City averaged 33.8M viewers, a record for a regular season game not televised in primetime or a playoff contest. And it is only Week 2.

  • Speaking of which, I was 2-3 on my Picks for Kicks this week. I was right on the Eagles and Lions winning and covering but wrong on the Giants, Jets and Patriots. That brings my record to 6-4 through two weeks.

  • For the first time in the Patrick Mahomes era, the Chiefs are off to an 0-2 start. Even Mahomes needs an offensive line for protection.

  • Forget the players, even the coaches are getting hurt. Rams head coach Sean McVay says he tore his plantar fascia, coaching Sunday’s win over Tennessee. He didn’t say how he injured it. The Rams play at Philadelphia on Sunday. Both teams are 2-0.

  • And speaking of coaches. With the NIL and college players getting paid, the pressure for college coaches to turn around a program is greater than ever, as evidenced by UCLA and Virginia Tech firing their head football coaches in the season’s first month.

That is going to do it for today’s newsletter. As always, thank you for subscribing and have a terrific Wednesday.
