Postseason baseball can be riveting

Is Boone on the hot seat? New York football is an embarrassment

Good morning, all! I hope your work week is off to a terrific start!

Some of these postseason baseball games have been riveting. It is one of the reasons the owners want more of them. I break it all down in the video.

That said, is New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone on the hot seat? Occasionally rumors emerge about Boone’s status, even though he still has two years to run on his contract, after this season. Now in his eighth season as Yankees manager, Boone has not won that coveted World Series.

He seemingly saved his job, after the Yankees rallied to beat the archrival Red Sox in the wild card series, but the seat might be getting hot again, after the Yankees lost the first two games of the best-of-5 ALDS to the Toronto Blue Jays. Not only did they lose, they were blown out, bowing 10-1 on Saturday and losing, 13-7 on Sunday, after falling behind, 12-0. As is usually the case, the Yankees lineup disappears against elite or even good pitchers. In Sunday’s case they lost to a rookie, making only his fourth major league appearance, Trey Yesavage. That Yesavage has a promising future was not the point. The Yankees couldn’t even manage a hit off of him, before he was lifted with one out in the sixth inning, after throwing 78 pitches and striking out 11.

Could the Yankees bounce back and win this series? Sure, but they have lost all wiggle room. There is no more margin for error and they have to prove they can win in Toronto, where they have lost eight of nine games this season.

Boone does not necessarily have to win this series to save his job, but if the Yankees get embarrassed again, particularly at Yankee Stadium, he very well could be out the door, especially since some high profile candidates, such as Bob Melvin and Bruce Bochy, are waiting in the wings.

Here are some other thoughts as I contemplate, when the Giants Brian Daboll will be given the pink slip:

  • How disgusting has the state of professional football in the New York City area become? And I write area, because the Giants and Jets play in New Jersey. But why let the facts get in the way of a good story. The bottom line is year after year, both the Giants and Jets manage to sink deeper into oblivion. Here we are after Week 5 and both teams are out of the playoff picture again. Furthermore, neither team doesn’t even compete. The Jets were never in their game against Dallas and are now 0-5, after losing, 37-22. Aaron Glenn is in his first year as coach so his job is safe. The Giants are another story. Following a hopeful win in Week 4 over the Chargers, they went down to New Orleans to play a winless Saints team, and after jumping out to a 14-3 lead, collapsed like a house of cards, losing 26-14. They had five straight takeaways on five straight possessions. That hasn’t been done since 2020, when - you guessed it - the Jets did it. Next up for the Giants are the Eagles on Thursday night. If Philly clobbers the Giants in that game, Daboll and Boone could both be on the unemployment line by Friday.

  • How is that QB situation working out in Indianapolis?

  • Tell the truth, how many of you picked the Ravens to win the Super Bowl this season?

  • Wow! Both Penn St. and Texas have fallen out of the AP-Top 25 college football poll, after being in the Top 10 last week. That’s what losing to unranked teams can do to you.

That is going to do it for today’s newsletter. Thank you for subscribing and have a terrific Monday!
