Pearl Harbor and the NFL

Picks for Kicks. Let the baseball fun begin

Good morning, all! It is Pearl Harbor Day. In the words of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, “A date which will live in infamy.”

As I relate in the above video, before my Picks for Kicks weekly segment, the Giants were hosting the Dodgers in the final regular season game for both teams. More than 55,000 fans were at the game, but even though word of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor was received over the ticker-tape machine at the Polo Grounds, public address announcer Arthur J. Daley, who was also the top sports columnist for the New York Times, chose not to inform the crowd. Instead, he provided a couple of cryptic messages over the PA, that sent a murmur through the crowd. Here is Daley explaining that fateful day:

Here are some other thoughts as I ponder which players might be elected to the baseball Hall of Fame:

  • The Contemporary Baseball Era Committee will announce tonight, if any nominee was elected to the Hall of Fame. The MLB network will carry the announcement at 7:30 EST. I would not be surprised if Don Mattingly and Dale Murphy are selected. I would be surprised if any of the players associated with steroids are picked.

  • If you watch the New York Jets game against Miami today, do not be shocked. The Jets will be wearing their Gotham City Uniforms for the first time. Don’t know if Batman and Robin will be in attendance.

  • I would not be surprised if the New York Yankees and Colorado Rockies are two very active teams at this week’s baseball winter meetings in Orlando. The Mets could also make a splash. Expect a ton of rumors, as well.

  • Speaking of rumors: talk the Red Sox are making a push for Bo Bichette tells me they may be backing off on Alex Bregman. If Boston signs both Bichette and Pete Alonso, that would be a big boost to their lineup.

That is going to do it for today’s newsletter. Thank you so much for subscribing and have a great Sunday!
