Good morning, all! I hope your Thursday is off to a terrific start!
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell wants to reopen the television contracts the league has with the networks, even though they have years to go, before they expire. Today’s video explains why you should be concerned.
Here are some other thoughts crossing my mind, as I worry about Roger Goodell, who makes more than $64M per season:
Do not underestimate Wednesday’s announcement that the college football power conferences and the Notre Dame athletic director have formed a committee to examine the future of the college football playoffs. I have been writing about this for quite sometime, that the playoff field will expand from the current 12-team format. That will be the purpose of this committee: how to restructure the playoffs. Meanwhile, you have a private equity firm, which wants to take over all of the power college football conferences for the purpose of making big money with a reorganized playoff system. You think NFL commissioner Roger Goodell is worried about too much money being left on the table. College football has even more to gain with an expanded playoff field. It may not happen by 2026, but it will happen.
By the way, college football is the big deal, when it comes to college athletics, but do not think basketball isn’t also on the radar screen. March Madness, as we know it, will undergo a massive change in our lifetime. Again, there is too much money to be had.
Here is an amazing stat on which to chew. In the last 13 seasons, the Cleveland Guardians have played only 25 games total, when they have not been in playoff contention. Take that big market teams.
MLB has yet to announce its revised television deal, but it might be outdated before it even starts, if the NFL commissioner gets his way on reopening the league’s TV contracts.
Ryder Cup Opening Ceremonies have been held. Click on this link to view the teams.
The Giants need to trade QB Russell Wilson now, even if he is not demanding a trade. Wilson is a class act, though his play has waned in recent years. With Giants coach Brian Daboll trying to save his job by turning to rookie Jaxson Dart, there is no need for Wilson on the team.
Make that four 50-home run seasons for the Yankees Aaron Judge. Only Judge, Babe Ruth, Mark McGuire and Sammy Sosa have had four seasons, where they have hit 50 or more home runs.
Word is Netflix is continuing to be all in on sports, willing to pony up big bucks to carry rivalry games like Notre Dame-USC in college football. The problem is rights to those games are already under contract. But that is not stopping Netflix for looking for an end around. These streaming services know their savior is live sporting events, especially football. Another reason why Goodell wants to reopen the NFL’s television contracts.
That is going to do it for today’s newsletter. Thank you for subscribing and have a terrific Thursday.
