Good morning, all! It’s hump day!!!!!
Is it fair to pick the Detroit Tigers to win the American League pennant? After adding Justin Verlander to an already stocked pitching staff, it is tough not to favor them. I break it down in the above commentary.
Here are some other thoughts as baseball injuries mount:
Turns out Patriots-Seahawks was not the biggest Super Bowl attraction, as some websites had suggested it might be. Viewership was down 2% from Super Bowl LIX, averaging 124.9 million viewers. The audience did peak in the second quarter, when 137.8M tuned in and overall, it was the second-most watched Super Bowl in history. In case you are wondering, the much-advertised halftime show’s viewership was down 4% from last year.
It seemed like only yesterday, we were all enthralled with a young Tiger Woods, turning the golf world upside down with one victory after another. Now his son Charlie is golfing up a storm. On Tuesday Charlie Woods announced on his Instagram account - my has the world changed - he will be attending Florida State in the fall of 2027. Woods is a junior at The Benjamin School. It had to be a proud moment for Tiger.
Tiger Woods attended Stanford University for two years. The SID of the golf team during that time was Steve Racynski. Fast forward a few years and I had the chance to work with Steve, when he became the public relations director of the New England Blizzard of the American Basketball League and I was their broadcaster. I might add Steve was a good golfer in his own right. Small world, isn’t it?
Wow. MLB spring training camps opened Tuesday with more openings today and the injuries are coming fast and furious. Mets SS Francisco Lindor may need surgery on his hamate bone. Blue Jays OF Anthony Santander could be out six months, after undergoing left labral surgery. Braves pitcher Spencer Schwellenbach has been placed on the 60-day IL with elbow inflammation. And to think, it was just Monday that hope sprung eternal for the baseball season.
Another MLB team is ditching its regional baseball channel and letting MLB handle its local television production. The Los Angeles Angels announced on Tuesday it is handing over coverage to MLB Media, meaning the league will handle the local television productions of 15 of 30 teams. Look for a reduction of local television revenue for each of the 15 teams MLB is bringing in house.
Juan Soto is moving from RF to LF this season, the Mets announced. Soto signed a 15-year, $765M contract last year, in case you forgot.
That is going to do it for today’s newsletter. Thank you for subscribing and have a wonderful Wednesday.
