Whadda night for Chicago
Da Bears. Bregman
Good morning, all! It may still be night in Chicago for many.
If Chicago is your kind of town, you have plenty to cheer about this morning. Within 45 minutes late Saturday night, the Chicago Bears engineered another dramatic comeback over their bitter rivals, the Green Bay Packers, to win a scintillating NFL Wild Card playoff game, 31-27 and the Chicago Cubs announced the signing of free agent infielder Alex Bregman.
It is great to be a Chicago fan.
Here are some other thoughts as I await a Wild Card Sunday:
If today’s NFL games are as wild as Packers-Bears, Rams-Panthers, I might not make it to the Pats-Chargers game at 8:20.
The Packers-Bears rivalry makes Yankees-Red Sox appear like two kids playing in a sandbox.
The Packers had their chances to put the Bears away, especially after leading 21-3 at the half. A missed field goal attempt, a missed point after and numerous dropped passes proved fatal. Now there is a good chance there will be another head coach vacancy in the NFL and you can list John Harbaugh as among the candidates. You don’t blow two second-half big leads in two critical games within four weeks against your archrival and expect to survive. The drumbeat for Matt LaFleur’s removal will grow louder in Green Bay.
Yes, the Yankees are out on Cody Bellinger and they should be, if we are to believe he is asking seven-years at $37M. You can use Alex Bregman as the example. The Cubs have reportedly given him a five-year, $175M deal with no opt outs and a no-trade clause. That will now set the market for Bellinger, who at 30, is 16 months younger than Bregman. It is also good news for Bo Bichette and Kyle Tucker, the two biggest everyday players who remain on the open market.
Rumors have the Yankees in on trying to sign either Bichette or Tucker but I do not see it. They will ask as much as Bellinger and the Yankees are now making it well known they are not opening their wallets for 2026, despite the talk emanating from the Bronx.
It is also apparent the Cubs are in it to win it. They have had a productive week signing Bregman and acquiring highly-touted pitcher Edward Cabrera from the Marlins.
That has to be fake news right? The Bruins scored 10 goals against the Rangers? Boston bombarded New York, 10-2 on Saturday. Put me in between the pipes and I could have held the Bruins to nine.
Enjoy the Sunday football, and as always, thank you for subscribing to the newsletter. Cheers!
