McIlroy makes history. Hartford expected to be backdrop for major announcement
Good morning, all and happy Monday!
Kudos to Rory McIlroy for winning the Masters. McIlroy fended off several challengers down the stretch, including the on charging Scottie Scheffler, a two-time Masters winner. McIlroy survived a bogie on the finishing hole to win by one stroke over Scheffler, shooting 12-under-par for the tourney. Scheffler finished at 11-under.
McIlroy, who already is in elite company, being one of the few golfers to win the career grand slam, now joins the pantheon of golfers, who have defended a Masters championship. Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods and Nick Faldo are the other golfers who have won the Masters in back-to-back seasons.
Here are some other Monday thoughts:
I hope the people, who run the New York Yankees, did not injure their arms patting themselves on the back, after the club’s 8-2 start. TheYanks have lost five straight with an anemic offense that resembles the 1962 Mets. Or is that the 2026 Mets? The Yankees were swept this weekend at Tampa Bay. Somewhere, George Steinbrenner is rolling over in his grave.
And speaking of those Mets. How do you get swept at home by the Sacramento Athletics? I get that the A’s are a better club. Remember, I picked them to be a wild card team in the AL this season. But being swept, and shutout twice? Wow! Incidentally, what a productive trip to the Big Apple for the Athletics. They took two-of-three from the Yankees and then swept the Mets. Three of their wins were shutouts.
R.I.P. Phil Garner. The former MLB infielder and manager died Saturday at the age of 76. How many people remember that Garner managed the Houston Astros to the National League pennant in 2005, before losing the World Series to the Chicago White Sox, a World Series that included among its spectators, the future Pope Leo?
The website Front Office Sports is reporting greater Hartford will serve as the backdrop for some major schedule changes to be announced by the PGA Tour. It is expected those changes will be revealed at a news conference the Tuesday (June 23) before the Travelers Championship in Hartford.
That is going to do it for today’s newsletter. As always, thank you for subscribing and have a marvelous Monday!
