Report: Tampa Bay Rays sold
Skubal vs. Skenes. Raleigh wins Derby. Jennings wants new contract or trade. NHL opens Oct. 7
Good morning, all! I hope your week is going well.
As Major League Baseball prepares for its All-Star game tonight in Atlanta, word broke late Monday afternoon that the Tampa Rays have been sold. The Athletic was the first to report the story that owner Stu Sternberg has agreed in principal to sell the Rays to a group led by Jacksonville developer Patrick Zalupski, pictured below. The sale could be fast-tracked and wrapped up as soon as September, according to the report.
The sale price is believed to be near $1.7B. Sternberg bought the franchise for $200M in 2004. The Rays are in contention for a wild card spot in the American League, although they entered the All-Star break having been swept four games by the red-hot Red Sox at Fenway Park. According to the report, the Rays under its new ownership, would prefer playing in a new stadium built in Tampa rather than St. Petersburg, site of the current ballpark, which is being repaired, after Hurricane Milton tore the roof off the Tropicana Dome in October. The Rays are playing their home games this season at the New York Yankees spring training location, George M. Steinbrenner Field.
