Good morning, all. I hope your weekend is going well.
The Hartford Yard Goats make it a point of honoring the late, great Roberto Clemente each season and last night was no exception. Before the game between the Yard Goats and the Harrisburg Senators, Clemente’s son, Luis, was presented with a $1,000 check for the Roberto Clemente foundation.
Clemente, the Hall of Fame outfielder with the Pittsburgh Pirates, died in a plane crash on Dec. 31, 1972 off the coast of Puerto Rico. He was on a mission to deliver humanitarian aid to earthquake-stricken Nicaragua. He and the Pirates always had a following in greater Hartford and the Clemente family remains beloved in the area. The Yard Goats have his uniform number 21 encircled in a plaque on the outfield wall at Dunkin’ Park.
Below is a picture of his son Luis, throwing out the first pitch before last night’s game:
Here are some other thoughts crossing my mind on this Sunday, Aug. 17, 2025:
Make that a franchise-record 14 straight wins for the Milwaukee Brewers. They rallied in the ninth inning last night in Cincinnati and beat the Reds in 11 innings, 6-5. More amazingly, the Brewers are 29-4 in their last 33 games. Yes, they are for real.
Are the once-proud St. Louis Cardinals that bad? Apparently. After losing a series at home to the Rockies, they have dropped two straight to the Yankees. By the way, their attendance is off by 7,500 fans per game. Ouch!
The Oklahoma City Thunder are the reigning NBA Champions. Maybe that’s why the LA Lakers and Golden State Warriors are tied for the most national television appearances in the schedule released last week by the NBA. Just on that alone, I’m rooting for OKC to repeat.
Well, that didn’t take long. According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, the Big 10 is pushing to expand the College Football Playoffs from 12 to at least 24 or maybe 28 teams. Do I hear 30? Remember, it’s all about the money. Why do you think the NCAA slapped Michigan with a $20M fine (chomp change for the university) instead of banning them from postseason play for a year, following the sign-stealing fiasco in their championship season? A Michigan game brings eyeballs to the screen or whatever device you now use to watch a game.
On that note, thank you for subscribing and have a great Sunday!
