Red Sox admit timing of trade not the best
OKC one win away from NBA title. Scout fired over hot-mic issue? Yankees lead down to 2 1/2 games. Tampa Bay hot
Good morning, all!
One day after the Boston Red Sox shocked the baseball world by trading superstar Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants, team president Sam Kennedy and GM Craig Breslow met the media via a video hook up to discuss the trade. You might not buy their reasoning and we have yet to hear from Devers, but from their comments, it is pretty obvious the franchise wanted Devers gone. Here is the video feed from NESN. Kennedy starts things off at the 7:30 mark of the video.
Among my takeaways from the news conference: Despite the productivity of Devers as a DH (15HRS/58RBI), the Red Sox wanted more flexibility at that position, even though Devers had complied with their wishes and moved off of third base to be DH.
Breslow said there was no mandate to find a team to assume the remainder of Devers’s contract. (He is still owed $255M)
The mandate is to assemble the best team that we possibly could. And in order to do that, we needed to create a more functional roster and give certain guys more playing time, be able to rotate through the DH spot, potentially match up there.
-Craig Breslow
Breslow admitted the Red Sox shopped Devers but the deal that made sense to them was with San Francisco.
We had a different vision for (Devers) going forward than he had, and we couldn’t get there. We couldn’t find alignment. And we reached that inflection point, and made the decision to make a big move.
-Sam Kennedy
Breslow admitted the timing of the trade - with the club playing its best baseball of the season and coming off winning five of six against the first place Yankees, “was absolutely not great.” He said Devers and the team were surprised to learn about the trade, minutes before the club was about to fly to Seattle to start a west coast trip.
Devers might take the high road, regarding some of the comments made by Kennedy and Breslow, after all he does not talk much to the media. It would not surprise me, however, if he counters some of the comments that spilled from the conference. I also believe Devers will post monster numbers for the Giants. Yes there is talk radio and other media in San Francisco that cover the Giants, but the scrutiny is nowhere near what it is like in Boston. That said, the Giants are rolling out the red carpet for Devers, who is scheduled to arrive today for tonight’s game vs. Cleveland:
Meanwhile, a report has emerged that the Red Sox fired a scout over a hot-mic issue. According to the story, scouting supervisor Carl Moesche had some not-so-nice- things to say about Breslow on a Zoom call he thought had concluded. He is no longer with the organization.
