Public, unions opposed to Connecticut Sun investment

Mariners in command. Browns to the burbs

Good morning, all! It’s hump day!!!

A proposal by Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont to invest a portion of the state employees pension fund to buy a piece of the WNBA’s Connecticut Sun is being met with overwhelming disapproval by all corners of the public, according to a new poll. I break it down in the above video.

Here are some other thoughts, as I recall numerous visits to Seattle back in the day:

  • James Franklin had a 4-21 record against AP Top 10 teams, when he was football coach at Penn St. According to some reports, his contract with Penn St. calls for him to be actively looking for another coaching job to collect all of that $48M payout. Then if he lands a new gig, what he earns would be subtracted from what Penn St. owes him. Sounds like a lawyers field day to me.

  • The Seattle Mariners are two wins away from earning their first-ever trip to the World Series. Their epic 15-inning game against the Tigers Friday night was a winner for Fox, snagging the highest rating of the postseason. Some 8.59M watched on TV, while 8.73M followed the game on all of the Fox platforms.

  • There is no need for TV Guide in this day and age, but it was a staple decades ago. The weekly publication was good at providing previews of games in all sports, especially the World Series, when it was a big deal. Because like all publications TV Guide had a deadline, it would sometimes get it wrong. Here was the preview for the 1962 World Series:

The only problem was the Dodgers lost a three-game playoff to the Giants and it was San Francisco who played the Yankees and lost in a seven-game classic.

  • It is a done deal. The owners of the Cleveland Browns have settled with the city and will move the team into a new stadium in the suburbs. The city had sued the Browns but the two sides have reached a $100M settlement, chump change for the franchise.

  • The Texas Rangers have filled their managerial vacancy but there are still seven openings: San Francisco, San Diego, Atlanta, Washington, Angels, Twins and Orioles. Warren Schaefer has not had the interim tag removed from his name in Colorado.

  • Apparently some Big 10 schools are developing cold feet over a potential investment in the conference by a state of California pension fund.

  • The Dodgers are not only favored to win this year’s World Series, but they are the favorites to win next season too at BetMGM.

That is going to do it for today’s newsletter. Have a great Wednesday and thank you for subscribing.
