Phillies are furious over Misiorowski pick. ‘It’s turning into the Savannah Bananas’
Connecticut Sun being wooed by Providence? Phillies will give Sanchez All-Star bonus. Red Sox make it nine straight. Buxton hits for cycle
Good morning, all! I hope your weekend is going splendidly.
Milwaukee Brewers pitching phenom Jacob Misiorowski made his MLB debut on June 12. One month later he was named to the National League’s All-Star team to replace Cubs pitcher Mathew Boyd, who opted out of the game because he pitched Saturday against the Yankees. The selection of Milwaukee’s 23-year-old right-hander, who has a 4-1 record with a 2.81 ERA, has stirred up controversy, especially among the Philadelphia Phillies.
Pitchers Cristopher Sánchez and Ranger Suárez have posted all-star numbers for the Phils. Sánchez is scheduled to pitch today at San Diego. He owns a 7-2 record with a 2.59 ERA. Suárez lost to the Padres on Friday night and has a 7-3 record with a 1.94 ERA. Both pitchers were restricted from pitching on Tuesday, but the league gave Sánchez a chance to be selected, if he waived that restriction. Meanwhile, in The Athletic, Phillies players offered the following comments about Misiorowski’s selection:
What a joke. That’s f—- terrible. I mean, that’s terrible, dude. I mean, it’s not the All-Star game in the sense that the best players go there, or people who have had the best season. It’s whoever sells the most tickets or has been put on social media the most. That’s essentially what it’s turned into.

It’s turning into the Savannah Bananas.
-Nick Castellanos
Most of the Phillies were quick not to blame Misiorowski. It’s not his fault he was selected, after being in the big leagues for a month. Although Turner, who teammates say was also deserving of being picked for the game, made some good points, the fact is some of “the best players” don’t go there by choice, opting to rest during the All-Star break. (As of this writing, 16 All-Stars have withdrawn from the game.) With the mega salaries today’s superstars make, missing a bonus by not competing in the All-Star game is not that big a financial blow.
My feeling? On the surface, I don’t believe Misiorowski was a worthy selection. One month of big league experience and he’s on the All-Star team? C’mon, man! There are many pitchers who have thrown hard and had 4-1 stretches. I’m not that worked up about it, though, probably because the All-Star game is a shell of itself, regardless of or maybe because of the artificial hype. It used to be worthy of being dubbed the Mid-Summer Classic. Interleague play and huge players salaries have so diluted the game, I believe it should not even be played. In my book, the exhibition now ranks up there with the defunct NFL Pro Bowl.
The All-Star game used to mean something. Now? Meh! I will be more interested in the dates of Sep. 1, 3 and 4. That’s when the Phillies will be in Milwaukee to face the Brewers. If Misiorowski doesn’t pitch one of those games for the Brewers, then I’ll get worked up.
Connecticut Sun to Providence?
I’ll bet no one had this story on their radar screen? The WNBA’s Connecticut Sun, which announced earlier it had hired a group to explore future options for the franchise, including possible sale of the team by the owners, the Mohegan Tribe, are being wooed by next door Rhode Island. WPRI television is reporting Rhode Island Gov. Dan McKee on Friday led an unidentified investor, who is interested in purchasing the team and moving it to Providence, on a tour of the Amica Mutual Pavillion, home to the AHL’s Providence Bruins and Providence College Friars.
Moving the team to Providence is not as far fetched as it might sound. The arena has a larger capacity than the Sun’s current home, Mohegan Sun Arena, the population base in the region is larger and an international airport is nearby. It will be interesting to see how this story unfolds, but more and more you get the idea the sun is setting on the franchise’s Connecticut future.

MLB draft tonight at 6:00. Here are some numbers to ponder per Baseball America: -Chances a first round pick collects 1,000 hits in a career are 22.5% -Chances a pitcher, who is a first round pick, registers 1,000 career strike outs are 14.3% -In other words, the draft is a crapshoot. Remember, Misiorowski was a second round draft choice, meaning 30 teams passed on him in the first round. In fact, teams passed on him in the second round, until the Brewers made him the 63rd overall selection in the draft
