Good morning, all! I hope you had a pleasant weekend. For some, your weekend continues!
We are once again reminded how big money is dominating college football more than ever. On Sunday Penn St. fired football coach James Franklin less than 24 hours after the Nittany Lions third straight loss, this time to three-touchdown underdog Northwestern. In the above video, I explain what this means for college athletics.
Here are some other Monday thoughts as we get ready for a big baseball day:
Mariners-Blue Jays start at 5:03 p.m. today on FOX in Game 2 of the ALCS and Dodgers-Brewers at 8:08 p.m. on TBS in Game 1 of the NLCS
We now live in a social media world, where winners can no longer win gracefully. Take this post on X by the Milwaukee Brewers official account, after winning their series against the Cubs. To understand the post, remember when the Cubs win at Wrigley Field they always fly the “W” flag:
It’s not just the Brewers, by the way, as just about every team does it. It is all in good fun, we are told.
James Franklin wasn’t the only college football coach who lost his job on Sunday. UAB gave Trent Dilfer the pink slip too. And Oregon St. coach Trent Bray was also given his walking papers on Sunday. At least the payout is big.
Nebraska’s Matt Rhule and Indiana’s Curt Cignetti already rumored to be Penn St. coaching targets. All I know is this; somebody is going to be in line for a big raise to keep from taking over the Nittany Lions.
Do not feel too sorry for James Franklin. He gets the $48M buyout and I am sure he will end up as a head coach someplace. There will be plenty of openings by season’s end. We are only into mid-October and already head coaches are falling like autumn leaves.
Not that you care, but I am having another brutal week on my NFL picks. I was 0-4 entering the SNF game between the Lions and Chiefs. I guess that’s why I call it Picks for Kicks.
And on that note, thank you for subscribing and have a great Monday.
