Good morning, all! I hope your Thursday is a great one!
The Miami Dolphins are off to an 0-2 start, including a loss at home last Sunday to the New England Patriots. Is their head coach Mike McDaniel on the hot seat? Yes! Does he have to win tonight’s game at Buffalo to save his job? No!
McDaniel’s job security is tenuous at best, but he has the support of the players, which is a big plus. If his team plays the Bills competitively tonight - and as of Wednesday night they are 12.5-point underdogs - that should be enough to save his job for now. The reason? The schedule works in his favor.
Miami could very well win three of their next four games. After tonight they host the Jets, play at Carolina, host the Chargers and play at Cleveland. Three of those next four games are very winnable, and maybe they spring the upset in the home game against the LAC.
I could be wrong about this but I say an 0-3 start does not cost McDaniel his job.
Here are some other thoughts, as I ponder how anyone can make heads or tails out of the transfer portal:
The NCAA has announced it will change the football transfer portal to a single time period. The decision is bringing about a mixed response, including from Ryan Day - he opposes the move - coach of defending national champion Ohio St. Day has a point, but to me, you still need a college degree and then some to figure out the nuances of the window. Here is the link, describing the new rule.
Anyone who had the Yankees Trent Grisham hitting 33 home runs come mid-September is lying.
It is happening. The Washington Commanders are moving back to Washington. The D.C. City Council has given final approval to developing the site of RFK Stadium and the surrounding area. A new stadium and a mixed-use development will be part of the development. The stadium is expected to be completed by 2030.
MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred told the website Front Office Sports he wants to be the commissioner who decides where the sport’s next two expansion teams are located. His term expires in January 2029 and he has announced he will retire at that time. Something tells me, however, if the owners have not decided on a successor - and remember it’s the owners who select the commissioner - he could be persuaded to hang around for a year or two after that. Just sayin’.
Good for these coaches like the Bears Ben Johnson and the Cowboys Brian Schottenheimer not making a big deal out of LV Raiders minority owner and Fox Sports broadcaster Tom Brady being in the broadcast booth when their teams play the Raiders. The media - per usual - is trying to drive clicks by making much ado about nothing. Schottenheimer summed it up best: “Everybody has everybody’s playbook. Everybody knows somebody that knows somebody that’s been some place. I don’t have a problem with it … I’ll talk football with anybody.”
