Good morning, all!
In recent years one of the best rivalries in women’s college basketball has been UConn-South Carolina. To be a rivalry, teams have to be contenders, highly ranked, play intense games against each other and win championships. Having two dynamic coaches does not hurt either in Geno Auriemma and Dawn Staley. UConn-South Carolina has checked all those boxes. According to Hearst Connecticut media, that rivalry has come to an end in the regular season.
UConn-South Carolina was must-see basketball during the regular season, adding some pizzazz to a normally mundane schedule, where each team’s victories against most opponents were lopsided.
“A source confirmed to CT Insider that the Huskies will not be continuing their regular-season series with South Carolina next year,” Hearst reported.
The season series dates back to 2014-2015 with the teams meeting 11 times. Of course, heightening the rivalry were the post season matchups between the two schools. In the 2022 national championship game the Gamecocks defeated the Huskies, 64-49. This past season UConn reclaimed the national championship with a decisive 82-59 win over South Carolina. The Huskies also halted South Carolina’s 71-game home winning streak in 2024-25.
There are reports UConn will resume its rivalry with Notre Dame.
