Good morning, all! I hope your Friday is off to a great start!
The NFL exhibition season comes to an end this weekend. Thank goodness!
Talk about a waste. The NFL preseason is nothing more than a money grab. Football-starved fans come out and watch the games, featuring second, third and taxi squad players. Rarely do the regulars play, especially big name stars like the quarterbacks. Yet, the gaming industry takes action on the games. That said, the NFL needs to change the schedule, and I break it down in this commentary:
Here are some other sports thoughts that crossed my mind for Friday, Aug. 22, 2025:
Al Michaels, 80, is still going strong broadcasting NFL games. Caught him calling some of the Giants-Pats exhibition game last night on PRIME. I know, I just did a commentary about the NFL schedule, but I do have an interest in Jaxson Dart and even in an exhibition game a team has to have a quarterback. Anyway, keep at it Al. Eighty is the new 60!
The Mets look lost.
The Rockies are 15-17 since the All-Star break. That might not seem like a big deal, but when you were 50 games below .500 at one point, that’s a big deal.
A-Rod brings the knife. The former MLB star is now co-owner of the NBA’s Minnesota Timberwolves and the WNBA’s Minnesota Linx and word is he and fellow owner Marc Lore laid off 35 to 40 people on the business side of their enterprise. At one point, 250 people were employed. It has always amazed me how the players who go on to buy sports franchises, suddenly adopt a different mindset, when they have to meet a budget.
Look for an ad blitz from Polymarket, as the NFL season gets underway. In case you’re wondering, it involves betting and predictions. What a shocker!
More and more it’s looking as if NBC will land that baseball deal from MLB. That will make Sunday night all sports on the network year ‘round. NFL Sunday Night Football, the NBA on Sunday night and MLB Sunday Night Baseball will all be on NBC. And I’m old enough to remember when Sunday night meant the Ed Sullivan Show.
Speaking of night, I came across this nugget from the Tonight Show, when the great Johnny Carson was the host. Somehow, he got on the topic of Babe Ruth’s called home run against the Chicago Cubs. They did get the year wrong, though. It was 1932. Enjoy!
That was late night television
The SEC has announced it will go to a nine-game conference football schedule from the current eight in 2026. The move is designed to prepare for an expanded field for the college football playoffs. And it will mean more money for the conference. I’m just wondering how long that will last, as that super conference is coming sooner than you think, rendering any conference schedule moot.
That is going to do it for this morning’s newsletter. Thank you for subscribing and have a great day!
