Good morning, all!
The clock is ticking on whether Missouri will keep or lose the Royals and Chiefs but the state is moving closer to giving those two franchises what they want to stay put.
Last week the Missouri senate passed a bill that would provide $1.5B in funding to be divided between both teams. The Royals want to vacate Kauffman Stadium and build a new ballpark in downtown Kansas City. The Chiefs want to remake Arrowhead Stadium with a massive renovation. The bill passed by the senate cleared a Missouri house committee on Tuesday. It goes to another committee today and a full house vote could come later this week. The governor says he will sign the bill.
If the legislation is approved the Royals and Chiefs will be faced with a major decision, because the state of Kansas has offered both franchises a sweetheart deal to move next door. Both teams wouldn’t even have to change their names, but the stadiums would be built in Kansas City, KS. However, the state has imposed a June 30 deadline for both or one team to agree to the deal.
How much of a full-court press is Kansas putting on the two franchises? Well all they have to do is say “Yes” by the 30th. Details could be ironed out later. So if Missouri approves the legislation, and it appears likely it will pass, then both the Royals and Chiefs will have to show the “Show me state” their efforts to stay in Missouri were more than just show.
