Meet baseball’s hottest team
Good morning, all! I hope your Fourth of July week is off to a terrific start. This week and next is a big vacation week for many so enjoy!
Can you name MLB’s hottest team? If you said the Miami Marlins, you would be correct. After polishing off the Arizona Diamondbacks, 6-4, on Sunday, the Marlins are now owners of a seven-game winning streak and nine wins in a row on the road. That is correct, on the road! All this, by the way, after the Marlins started the month by being swept by the lowly Colorado Rockies. Now they are finishing the month, as baseball’s hottest team.
Among the club’s that fell in the path of the wrecking-ball Marlins was San Francisco. The Marlins swept the Giants, who by the way own a 3-6 record since acquiring Rafael Devers from the Red Sox. Miami has improved its record to 37-45 and has the makings of an interesting second-half. That is why you cannot believe these half-baked trade rumors generated by websites begging for clicks.
MLB’s trade deadline is July 31 and already unsubstantiated stories are surfacing that the Marlins should be trading this pitcher (Sandy Alcantara) or that pitcher (Edward Cabrera). The rumors usually come from media in big markets, who believe they have a right to poach the small market teams. Bullspit! I hope the Marlins stay put, keep their young stars and make a run.
I have grown to love how small market teams outsmart the big market clubs, who along with their fans possess an arrogance that views the small market teams as some feeder system. Bullspit again! If the small market clubs like the Marlins, Tampa Bay, Pittsburgh (who just swept the multi-billionaire owned, big market Mets in a three-game series) and others have the front office intelligence operation to beat the big market clubs, then good for them. That is true competitive balance.
So here is hoping Miami keeps winning and doesn’t cave under the pressure to trade up-and-coming players to remain in a constant rebuild. That would make zero sense. A contending Miami and/or Pittsburgh would make for an interesting second-half.
