Good morning, all! It baseball trade deadline day!
MLB’s trade deadline arrives at 6 PM EDT today and the market has picked up decidedly in the last 24 hours. Expect more activity up to the deadline. Remember, unlike previous seasons, no waiver deals, involving players on the 40-man roster can be transacted, after the deadline.
It is now obvious the Seattle Mariners are all in after reacquiring slugger Eugenio Suárez from the Arizona Diamondbacks in a blockbuster deal. With MLB home run leader Cal Raleigh and now Suárez, Seattle has a lethal one-two punch.
The NL East is now a two-team race between the suddenly slumping first place Mets and the equally, struggling Philadelphia Phillies. The Phils are 1/2 game behind New York. The Mets obtained two top-notch relievers to shore up their bullpen on Wednesday, while the Phillies extracted the closer they have coveted from Minnesota. The Red Sox have reportedly picked up left hander Steven Matz from the Cardinals.
Meanwhile, Arizona, San Francisco, St. Louis, Cleveland and Minnesota are among the clubs making it well known they are cashing in their chips for next season.

Here are some other stories that caught my eye for Thursday, July 31, 2025:
The NFL returns tonight for the Hall of Fame game in Canton, OH. The Lions and Chargers will do battle and legendary broadcaster Brent Musburger will be in the NBC booth for the second half. He is the 2025 winner of the Pete Rozelle Radio-Television Award. If you are a certain age, you remember Musburger being the host of CBS’s The NFL Today. He was everywhere on CBS Sports, until the network canned him after the 1990 NCAA Men’s Final Four. Now 86, Musburger is heavily involved in the gaming industry in Las Vegas. It’s been quite a ride for the man, who started his career as a minor league baseball umpire.
By the way, isn’t it interesting there is no mention of Musburger’s induction on the CBS Sports website? Musburger was bitter over his dismissal from the network and the two sides never made up.
Been watching NBA commissioner Adam Silver’s trek through Europe. He is working hard to launch an NBA-Europe. It was Musburger, who told Chris “Maddog” Russo a few years ago on his radio program: “You cannot imagine how big the NBA is internationally, especially in the betting arena.” Why is Silver over in Europe making such a big push? One word; money!
As always, thank you for subscribing and for your support. Have a terrific day!
