Let Scottie be Scottie
They are crazy, if they trade these players. Draft choice staying put. Don't buy hot dogs at Fenway?
Good morning, all!
It has been quite a year for golfer Scottie Scheffler, winning two major tournaments: the PGA Championship and last Sunday’s British Open. Since then, I have been reading how Scheffler is the next Tiger Woods. Then another opinion piece states Scheffler should not be compared to Woods but to Jack Nicklaus. Here’s an idea. How about we let Scottie Scheffler be Scottie Scheffer?
We have a tendency in sports as in life to constantly compare. I suppose it’s natural. “He reminds me of so-so,” “She has a shot reminiscent of so-so,” etc. That’s life, but I am going to compare Scottie Scheffler to Scottie Scheffler. He is forging his own place in the record books and he’s not even 30. That’s good enough for me.
Did you honestly have this on your bingo card in April?
Remember when the New York Yankees and their torpedo bats opened the season by sweeping the Milwaukee Brewers? Remember when the Brewers got off to an 0-4 start? Who’s talking now? Baseball season really is a marathon not a sprint.

It’s five months until Christmas for those keeping score at home
I’ve always thought the New York Yankees have overhyped their prospects. Most organizations do, but the Yankees are expert at it. However, as the Yankees slip farther out of first place and pressure grows to make a trade, they would be crazy to trade former number one draft pick, slugger Spencer Jones. I’ve watched Jones for three seasons now and he is the real deal, especially since he has become more disciplined at the plate, reducing his strike outs. In case you missed, Jones hit three home runs on Thursday for the Yankees AAA affiliate Scranton-Wilkes Barre against Rochester. That gives him 13 home runs in 19 games at AAA. Already the so-called “experts” are angling for the Yankees to trade him. The Yankees are nuts, if they do.
For that matter, the Yankees would be nuts if they traded prospects George Lombard Jr. (SS), Roc Riggio (2B), Rafael Flores (C, 1B) and Cam Schlittler (P). These are the first genuine prospects I have seen come through the Yankees system in years and Schlittler is already in the big leagues. So who should the Yankees trade, after all, you have to give up something to get something? I still say Anthony Volpe (SS), Ben Rice (1B, C, DH), Trent Grisham (OF), J.C. Escarra (C) and Jonathan Loáisiga (P) are candidates, among others. The Yankees much-maligned farm system is finally producing. To trade the players I just mentioned would be a mistake.
Yes, the Toronto Blue Jays are red-hot and the once dominant Detroit Tigers have now lost 10 of 11 games. Ouch!
Did you see this? UCLA pitcher Angel Cervantes, selected in the second round of last week’s MLB draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates, has opted to stay at UCLA, passing on at least a $1.9M+ contract. After making his decision on Wednesday, Cervantes posted this picture on X:
Well that didn’t take long. The Jets have lost their quarterback, Justin Fields, after he was carted off the field, following an injury at Thursday’s practice. Turns out the injury wasn’t as serious as first thought, as he has a dislocated toe. The team lists him as “day-to-day.” As the late Vin Scully, once said: “Aren’t we all.”

The FCC has given approval of Skydance’s purchase of CBS’s parent company Paramount for $8.4B. Time will tell how this will impact the sports properties, calling CBS home
By the time you read this, it’s possible labor issues will be settled, but as of this writing, the union representing concessionaire Aramark is threatening to strike at Fenway Park and MGM Music Hall in Boston tonight. In fact, union workers are imploring fans who attend the Red Sox-Dodgers game not to buy hot dogs and other concessions. It will be interesting to see if that happens. A baseball game without a hot dog? Would that be considered crossing a picket line?
