Good morning, all! I hope your week is off to a terrific start!
Former New York Giants head coach back to the Giants? Hear me out on this, as I explain in the above commentary.
Here are some other thoughts, as I sort out Black Monday news:
If you are looking for Bears-Packers on over-the-air television Saturday night in a huge NFL wild card game between bitter rivals, you are out of luck. That game will be on PRIME-TV. The new world continues to evolve. I also would not be surprised if that game snags a record audience for the NFL on PRIME.
It is now official. Don Mattingly has been named the new bench coach of the Philadelphia Phillies. The move also unites him with his son, Preston Mattingly, who is the Phillies GM. All this conversation that Don Mattingly should be reunited with his former team and replace Aaron Boone as manager of the Yankees, was just that. Yes, Mattingly will always be a beloved Yankee, but I have had baseball people tell me Mattingly had lost his zest for managing in his last season as Marlins manager. Mattingly makes a perfect bench coach and not only does he join his son, but unites with another former Yankees coach, manager Rob Thomson.
By the way, I agree with The Athletic that the Baltimore Orioles, so far, are the most improved club this off season. I could easily see the Orioles and Blue Jays battling it out for the A.L. East.
Word is up to 4,500 players could enter the college football transfer portal before all is said and done.
Black Monday, of course, refers to the Monday after the end of the NFL regular season, to highlight the number of coaches and administrators who are fired. Where did the term in relation to sports originate? (Black Monday was first mentioned, when the stock market tanked in 1987.) The Chicago Tribune was credited with using the term in the late 1990s, when a number of college football coaches lost their jobs on the same day. The Associated Press, New York Post, and Houston Chronicle began using the phrase in 1998, and the rest is history.
That is going to do it for today’s newsletter. Thank you so much for subscribing and have a terrific Tuesday.
