Good morning, all.
It has been a rough two weeks for MLB managers. Last week the Pittsburgh Pirates fired Derek Shelton. I’d like to think he was taken out of his misery. On Sunday the Colorado Rockies gave the heave-ho to Bud Black. The next manager on the hot seat? How about the Orioles Brandon Hyde?
The Orioles, expected to contend in the AL East, were just swept by the red-hot Minnesota Twins, dropping to 15-27. The Birds are occupying the cellar, their only saving grace being in a mediocre division that has them trailing the first place Yankees by 9 1/2 games. Will that be enough to save Hyde’s job?
A good winning streak and the Birds are back in the race. The aforementioned Twins were reeling, seven games under .500 with manager Rocco Baldelli’s job on the line but now have won 11 straight, moving to within five games of first place Detroit, which has the best winning percentage in the bigs along with the Dodgers.
Baltimore hosts Washington this weekend. As of this writing, Hyde is still the manager. If they don’t take the series from the lowly Nationals this weekend, Hyde may be the next to go.
