Is Cora managing for his job?
D-Day anniversary. Pacers rally for dramatic win. Rodgers to Steelers
Good morning, all!
Is it too early to refer to Alex Cora as the beleaguered manager of the Boston Red Sox? We should find out over the next nine days. The Red Sox will play the archrival Yankees for six games. After several years of futility, the Red Sox were expected to be contenders this season. Granted the club has been beset by injuries, but entering this weekend’s three-game series at Yankee Stadium, Boston is 11 down in the loss column to the first place Yankees, who have had their own injury problems.
The Yankees have their own flaws and they usually have problems against the Red Sox, especially with Rafael Devers. In other words, this is an excellent opportunity for Boston to get back in the race. If they do not take advantage, the drumbeat for Cora’s dismissal will grow louder.
There were a lot of empty seats for Wednesday afternoon’s game at Fenway Park, a game the Red Sox won on a walk-off HR to avoid being swept by the lowly Angels. They are four game under .500; not even treading water.
If things do not change quickly, Cora could be out as manager. As I wrote earlier this week, the Knicks dismissal of Tom Thibodeau as coach, despite years and millions left on his contract, demonstrated teams are no longer reluctant to fire coaches or managers who are still under contract long term and owed millions. Cora, who was signed to a three-year extension last July for $27M, could be next, unless his team shows progress against the hated Yankees.
D-Day anniversary
Today marks the 81st anniversary of D-Day, the day Allied forces began the liberation of France and the European continent with the invasion of Normandy. As I wrote in a previous newsletter, I visited the landing where the invasion took place in 2018. It was a sobering moment.
Let us never forget.
