Is Blades Brown golf's next phenom?
Mike McCarthy? Seriously? Conference titles Sunday.
Good morning, all! Welcome to conference championships Sunday!
It is a big day for NFL football, so let’s start off with some golf. Why not? Visions of golf matches should be dancing in your head, as snow and ice are about to descend on the eastern portion of the nation.
Who is Blades Brown you ask? He is an 18-year-old phenom, vying for the championship of the American Express PGA Tour tournament in LaQuinta, CA. Brown is battling, among others, the world’s number one golfer Scottie Scheffler.
In Saturday’s third round, Brown shot a 68, after a second round score of 60. The PGA Tour needs some sizzle. Maybe it will take a teenager to give the tour what it desperately needs. Remember the name. The guess here is you have not heard the last of Blades Brown.
Here are some other thoughts on the last Sunday in January:
Here we go. Conference title Sunday. The Patriots vs. Broncos battle for the AFC title, while the Rams vs. Seahawks lock horns for the NFC title. My picks? Patriots and Seahawks. Enjoy the games, especially if you are hunkered down because of the snowstorm.
Mike McCarthy? The next coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers? Somehow, I did not have that on my bingo card. And judging by reaction, neither did many of the Steelers fans. You wonder if the hire is designed to lure back QB Aaron Rodgers for another season, as the Steelers give us Green Bay Packers redux.
Imagine that. The legendary Rick Pitino snags his 900th career win as college basketball coach, as his St. John’s team defeats Xavier, coached by his son Richard. Can you envisioin the Hall of Fame coach coddling his newborn son, ever thinking someday he would snag a milestone victory as a coach, over a team coached by his son?
So Mike McDaniel has taken himself out of the running for the Buffalo Bills head coaching job. He also withdrew from consideration as the Cleveland Browns head coach. That means, unless the Las Vegas Raiders can sweep him off his feet, it looks as if he is perfectly content to be the new OC of the Los Angeles Chargers. When you think about it, not a bad move for him, as he takes a step back. Make no mistake about it, though, McDaniel will be an NFL head coach again.
So the Cleveland Guardians are borrowing a page from the Los Angeles Dodgers and not only reworking Jose Ramirez’s contract with a $107M extension, $70M will be deferred so that the Guardians do not get whacked with a luxury tax. Baseball needs to address this contract deferral action. The game’s financial infrastructure already resembles a house of cards, ready to collapse at the least bit seismic shift. It does not need any more financial shenanigans.
Incidentally, part of the Ramirez deal includes one road trip per season, where he gets to travel alone, sans teammates, with his family, all expenses paid. And…wait for it…an additional suite to his hotel rooms on road trips. And to think Babe Ruth had a roommate. Amazing.
According to the website Sportico, the hottest social media site for pro athletes today is not TikTok or Instagram, but LinkedIn. Go figure.
Rumors are running rampant, but Wink Martindale becoming the next DC of the New York Jets and Rex Ryan becoming the next DC of the New York Giants would be too good to be true. The New York media would have a field day.
That is going to do it for today’s newsletter. Thank you so much for subscribing and enjoy your Sunday!
