Good morning, all!
Hey Rory McIlroy? It’s called respect. Aretha Franklin even sang a song about it, although the lyrics had a different connotation, but I digress.
Legendary golfer Jack Nicklaus holds his annual tournament this weekend outside of Columbus, OH. It’s called the Memorial. Master’s and now grand slam club member Rory McIlroy is not a participant. It happens. Nicklaus even admitted so in his comments about McIlroy’s absence. He also admitted McIlroy did not phone him to tell him he was a non attendee.
McIlroy has participated in previous Memorials. He owed, arguably the greatest golfer of all time, a phone call to tell the Golden Bear he would have to pass up this year’s event. Some are suggesting McIlroy is snubbing Nicklaus because of recent comments Jack made that McIlroy, for as good a golfer as he is, could be even better. When Nicklaus was asked if his game was more comparable to Scottie Scheffler’s or McIlroy’s he said Scheffler’s.
If McIlroy does not want to be liked - and he need not be to succeed as a golfer - he’s doing a great job of it. Remember, he snubbed the media at the recent PGA Championship, setting off another firestorm on social media, when Amanda Balionis of CBS took to her widely followed Instagram account, praising Bryson DeChambeau and Jon Rahm for agreeing to interviews, after neither succeeded at the PGA Championship. Some interpreted it as a swipe at McIlroy. Remember, Balionis and McIlroy were romantically linked, before Rory reconciled with his wife, a romance, by the way, both have denied.
My gut tells me McIlroy will try to make amends and phone Nicklaus. The bottom line, however, is the call should have been made days ago. As Aretha says, it’s called R-E-S-P-E-C-T!
