Everybody is saying...
The new world of sports clickbait
Good morning, all! It’s hump day!
I guess I missed the Zoom meeting. You know, the one where the consultant told these sports websites be sure to start your headline with “Everybody is saying the same thing about…” It’s a great way to generate clicks.
On any given day - pick your sports website - expect to read headlines such as:
“Everybody is saying the same thing about the Celtics trade.”
“Everybody is saying the same thing about (Aaron) Boone’s move.”
“Everybody is saying the same thing about LeBron James.”
“Everybody is saying the same thing about the USA soccer team.”
The story is then followed by two or three posts from social media, showing “Everybody” saying the same thing.
It’s become so rampant, iHeart media has started a podcast, “Everybody Is Watching Women Pro Sports.” Except they might be late to the party, because sports media critic Andrew Marchand hosts a podcast entitled, “Everybody Loves Sports Media.” In fact, he uses this same platform, Substack, to distribute it. Doesn’t everybody?
Everybody covers a lot of people. I almost feel left out. There are times, after all, when I’m not saying the same thing about Boone’s move. Or LeBron James. Or the Celtics trade. Sometimes I don’t even understand Boone’s moves to say the same thing as everybody.
Yes. I am convinced it was a Zoom meeting. You might also convince me the consultant who hosted the meeting was a Dean Martin fan. Wasn’t Dino who made “Everybody Loves Somebody” a hit? At least that’s what everybody was saying at the time.
That is going to do it for today’s newsletter. A big thank you to everybody who is a subscriber and have a wonderful Wednesday!
DAN
