Does a Padres sale indicate labor headwinds?

Ohtani, Judge repeat MVPs

Thank you to everyone who tuned into my live video! Join me for my next live video in the app.

Good morning, all!

Here are some other thoughts, as I check my stowed-away coins to determine if I have enough to buy the San Diego Padres:

  • Shohei Ohtani of the Dodgers has won his second straight NL MVP award and once again he wins it unanimously. It is also his fourth MVP overall and he is the only player in MLB history to win the MVP twice in each league. Aaron Judge of the Yankees has won the AL MVP for a second straight season and the third of his career. Judge joins Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle and Yogi Berra as Yankees to win three MVPs.

  • Listen. I am old enough to remember, when the Padres original owner, C. Arnolt Smith ,was about to move the franchise to Washington, D.C. McDonald’s owner Ray Kroc came along to save the franchise for San Diego and the rest is more history than a Big Mac.

  • If you are confused about all these streaming services carrying live sports, you are not alone. Let’s see. NBC Sports is about to launch the return of its sports network, NBCSN on YouTube, which is in a contractual tussle with ESPN-parent owner Disney, meaning no ESPN on YouTube TV. Then NBC Sports is about to announce a deal to televise MLB baseball, but do not expect any MLB games on NBC’s streaming service Peacock. Except there could be postseason baseball on Peacock. Then there is the launch of USA Sports, a network which used to be owned by NBC but is no more. Except, USA Sports still has the rights to sporting events originally held by NBC, i.e. golf, tennis, etc. And, USA Sports will be televising WNBA games, except some will be televised by other networks. My head is spinning so badly, I couldn’t tell you if the NBC Peacock is live and in living color.

  • By the way, did I mention that MLS is moving to Apple-TV’s main subscription tier. Yeesh!

  • Northwestern will playing a college football game at Wrigley Field this weekend. Check out how the grid-iron is positioned, compared to when the Chicago Bears played at Wrigley:

  • I do not know why NBC dumped Paul Azinger from its golf coverage, but he sure does a tremendous job, covering the Champions Tour on the Golf Channel, which is no longer owned by NBC but by Versant.

  • Say what? Monday night’s NFL game between the Eagles and Cowboys averaged more than 20M viewers, without being televised on YouTube TV. The NFL is king, even if some of its audience avenues are shutoff.

That is going to do it for today’s newsletter. Thank you for your support and have a terrific TGIF!
