Devers takes the high road. Ouch! Will play any position
Panthers win Stanley Cup again. Bueckers on Geno in attendance. Yankees shutout 3 straight. Rockies slug 7 HRs
Good morning, all!
As expected, Rafael Devers took the high road in his introductory press conference with the San Francisco Giants, before Tuesday’s game against Cleveland. Anyone expecting Devers to rip the Red Sox were disappointed. Talk show hosts will have to find something else to gripe about.
He told us, ‘I’ll play wherever you want me to play, I’ll hit wherever you want me to hit.
-Giants manager Bob Melvin
Devers had apparently miffed Red Sox brass for refusing to play first base. He had already made one position change, moving off third base to accommodate free agent Alex Bregman, to become a full time DH.
Devers refused to be critical of the Red Sox, instead offering positive comments about the Red Sox and their fans.
First of all, I just want to thank the Boston Red Sox organization for signing me at 16 and giving me the opportunity to become a big leaguer. I’m moving forward from the situation in Boston, moving ahead as a San Francisco Giant, and (I’m) just going to compete.
I just want to thank the Boston fans. They supported me throughout my whole time there, and I jsut want to (tell) them, ‘Thank You.’”
-Rafael Devers
As I wrote in a previous post, I thought Devers would not be critical of the Red Sox, even though team president Sam Kennedy and GM Craig Breslow made some comments in a Zoom call on Monday, that might have led Devers to counter the perception he was not a team player, as Kennedy and Breslow suggested in their veiled comments. Instead he opted to leave Boston on an upbeat note.
My prediction? Devers posted above average numbers before. Expect him to post monster numbers, now that he is away from the media scrutiny and drama that comes with playing for the Boston Red Sox.
