Cowboys are most valuable
Good morning, all! Friday already? You have to love those four-day work weeks!
The Dallas Cowboys have not won a Super Bowl since 1996, but that has not stopped them for being the most valuable franchise in the NFL. As the nation’s most popular sports league launches another season, CNBC has the Cowboys worth $12.5B, even though they could not afford Micah Parsons.
The NFL itself is a money-making machine. Ten franchises are valued at over $8B. Second on the list are the Los Angeles Rams, valued at $10.7B followed by the New York Giants at $10.5B. The Giants, who have not won a Super Bowl since 2012, announced earlier the week that ownership has sold 10 percent of the franchise to the Koch family for more than $1B. More and more franchises are selling minority interests because of the high valuation.
Here are some other thoughts crossing my mind, as I ponder how difficult it must be rooting for the Jets:
Saying New York Jets fans are frustrated is an understatement, but a fan posted this on X:
Among the Week 1 NFL matchups that have my attention are Lions at Packers at 4:25 Sunday afternoon and Ravens at Bills Sunday night at 8:20.
Factoid: The Packers went 1-5 against divisional opponents last season and still made the playoffs.
State of Connecticut wants an ownership stake in the WNBA’s Connecticut Sun. It also wants to build the Sun a state-of-the-art practice facility. I know Connecticut is basketball-crazed but I think this will be a hard sell. Taxpayers owning a professional sports franchise, with infrastructure from roads to schools in dire need of help? Not to mention I doubt the WNBA would approve the sale, even though the state would not be a majority owner. This will be an interesting story to follow, as a possible attempt by the franchise’s owner, the Mohegan Tribe, to sell the team, has more twists and turns than a Caitlin Clark trip up the floor.
Reports are Bill Belichick has banned Patriots scouts from University of North Carolina football practices. At least Bill and the Pats parted on good terms.
That is going to do it for today’s newsletter. As always, thank you for subscribing and have a terrific Friday.
