Rain outs, cold weather and postponements have dominated the baseball scene this April in games played at all levels. Games being played in rain, wind, 40-degree temperatures and sometimes all three simultaneously have been the norm throughout the sport. It has also brought about the usual lament from the MLB corner: “They start the season too soon.”
In reality, this is nothing more than an age-old complaint. Games in April have always been dominated by the weather we are experiencing this season. Fifty-eight years ago, Joe Trimble of the NY Daily News wrote about conditions in April of 1967. The story could have been written today:
Yes, the MLB season starts two weeks earlier compared to 1967 and they play more night games in April than 58 years ago, but the weather issues are the same now as then. Don’t look for any changes. Even if ballparks are near empty in April, season tickets have been sold and fresh programming is needed for the regional sports networks. Meanwhile, the sports seasons continue to overlap now as then.
The times maybe a-changing, but on occasion the times stay the same.
My family knows me
Well, I turn another year younger today and I celebrated with my family yesterday. I must say my brothers and sister-in-law certainly know me with these wonderful gifts.
Nothing like a glass of scotch and reading through The DiMaggio Albums on a cold, winter’s night, or in this case, even sooner. Started thumbing through the DiMaggio books last night and could not put them down. I cannot thank my family enough. I am God blessed.
