Good morning, all. I hope your Thursday is off to a terrific start!
Major League Baseball’s postseason and college football are ratings hits on television. I break it all down in the above video.
Here are some other thoughts about sports as I contemplate the dynasty known as the Los Angeles Dodgers:
In your wildest dreams, could you ever imagine the Pope giving it to a Cubs fan? It happened on Wednesday as Illinois-born Pope Leo XIV, riding in the Popemobile in Vatican Square, heard someone yell: “Go Cubs!” The Pope, who grew up a White Sox fan and attended the 2005 World Series, won by the White Sox over the Astros, yelled back in both Spanish and English: “Han Perdido! They lost.” Of course, the White Sox were not going to let that one go without acknowledgement on social media:
The New York Yankees have scheduled a press conference today involving manager Aaron Boone and GM Brian Cashman. Expect the usual end-of-the-season pablum from a franchise which has won just one World Series in this century. Meanwhile, the Dodgers are on the verge of advancing to their fifth World Series in the last nine seasons.
Apparently the LA Angels are not the only big league club interested in Albert Pujols as manager. There are reports the Baltimore Orioles are also showing interest in the former Cardinals and Angels slugger.
Never thought I would see another complete game thrown in a postseason baseball game, but I guess Yoshinobu Yamamoto proved me wrong. More of the same, please?
Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy is back at practice but he admits his ankle is not fully healed. Look for Carson Wentz to continue to take the snaps for the Vikes, which may not be the worst thing for coach Kevin O’Connell.
After a 5-0 start, Oklahoma loses to Texas in the Red River Rivalry. Now there are stories Sooners coach Brian Venables job could be on the line. Amazing!
The radio world, much like the newspaper world, continues to nosedive and for the second time it has cost Colorado Rockies radio broadcaster Jerry Schemmel his job. Employed by iHeartradio, which broadcasts the Rockies games on station KOA, Schemmel was laid off last week as part of another round of layoffs at iHeart stations across the country. In January 2020, Schemmel lost his Rockies radio gig, when iHeart cut his job, but then was hired back in 2022 at just 25% of the salary he was making before the 2020 job cut. Now he has been let go again. The late, great Vin Scully always said, when you broadcast baseball games, make sure you are employed by the ball club not the radio station.
That is going to do it for today’s newsletter. As always, thank you for subscribing and enjoy your day!
