Are the Detroit Tigers the best?
Castiglione to retire. Cairo named interim. Will Rockies be Yankees trading partners?
Good morning, all! I hope your Tuesday is off to a terrific start!
One week before Major League Baseball’s All-Star game and you can make a strong case the Detroit Tigers are baseball’s best team. MLB issues its power rankings once a week. I do not put much stock into it. Football and basketball have their top rankings for college teams and its baseball’s way of imitating those “amateur” sports by disguising a poll as power rankings. Nevertheless, it should not go unnoticed that the Detroit Tigers are MLB’s top ranked club.
And why shouldn’t they be? The Tigers have the best record (58-34) of any club, the most wins and the best pitcher in baseball in Tarik Skubal, although you might get an argument from Pittsburgh Pirates fans on that last note. After Monday’s 5-1 win over Tampa Bay, they owned a 14-game lead in the A.L. Central Division. The Tigers also have four players on the A.L. All-Star team, including three starters. In a short series with Skubal heading the rotation, the Tigers are a tough club to pick against.
A.J. Hinch has to be the leading candidate for manager of the year and Javier Baez could earn comeback player of the year honors. More interesting is the depth of the Tigers farm system. This club is not a one year wonder. With talent from the majors through its farm teams, Detroit should be around for a long time.

Oswaldo Peraza and Jonathan Loaisiga might be part of the package. If the Yankees were to toss in Ben Rice and the Rockies throw in Michael Toglia then you would have a blockbuster deal for sure. Just sayin.’
