Good morning, all!
Are the Kansas City Chiefs Kansas bound? As you recall the Chiefs and Royals were both seeking funding from Missouri to help with their stadium ventures. The Royals want to build a new ballpark in downtown Kansas City and the Chiefs want to undertake a massive renovation of their stadium. The Missouri legislature approved what both franchises were seeking and the governor signed the bill.
The legislature’s willingness to pony up public money - always controversial, when it comes to helping professional sports teams - was the result of next door Kansas already approving funding for new stadiums for both the Royals and Chiefs. The one proviso was the teams had to make a decision by June 30.
June 30 is next Monday and now the Chiefs are requesting an extension of the deadline and the legislature is open to meeting that request. This will be a story to monitor closely. In Missouri, the Chiefs would be renovating Arrowhead Stadium for $1.5B. In Kansas they would get a brand new $3B domed stadium and be able to host a Super Bowl. Stay tuned.
