Are Chiefs and Royals Kansas bound?
Ohtani rises to occasion. Cooper Flagg got $28M at Duke. Wait is on for Cup finals
Good morning, all!
Are the Kansas City Chiefs and Royals bound for Kansas? It would seem that way.
It’s hard to believe that the stadium complex in suburban Kansas City, Mo., which has separate football and baseball venues, is long-in-the-tooth. Wasn’t it just yesterday they both opened and were the envy of all other outdoor sports franchises? Time marches on, and it was 52 years ago that the complex became operational.
Now the Royals want a downtown ballpark and Chiefs a new stadium, preferably with a dome so they can host a Super Bowl, in the same area as the old one. The usual problem, however, is money. Both clubs want to partially fund their homes with public money, and legislation to underwrite the cost is stalled in the Missouri legislature. Chiefs owner Clark Hunt hopes to make a decision on his team’s future sometime mid-summer.
Enter the state of Kansas. Legislation has already been signed by the governor to underwrite part of the cost for new stadiums for both the Chiefs and Royals in Kansas City; Kansas City, KS that is. How convenient. It would be a short move for both franchises without even a name change. Both teams would still serve the same metropolitan area they share now. All they need do is sign on the dotted line.
Heck, if the New York Giants and Jets can play in New Jersey, why can’t the Kansas City Chiefs and Royals play in Kansas City?
The clock is ticking with developments expected shortly. This will be an interesting story to watch.
