AI in sports
Without Vrabel. Great time for college hoops
Good morning, all and happy Monday!
Everywhere you turn there are stories about artificial intelligence. AI, AI! That’s all you read and hear, be it chatgpt, Claude, Gemini, you name it. So I took a stab at it over the weekend and asked chatgpt to draw me a picture of Yankee Stadium, circa 1963. I was focused on 1963, having come across an AI generated video on You Tube of Mickey Mantle’s injury-riddled 1963 season. Believe me You Tube is filled with AI videos, some of them almost accurate. Anyway, here is how chatgpt envisioned Yankee Stadium in 1963:
Now here is the real Yankee Stadium, circa 1963:
I wish I could say AI was close but the pictures were not even in the same ballpark. I would give chatgpt a strike out on that one.
Last week, we had the passing of the legendary Lou Holtz. So I asked chatgpt to draw the back page of a newspaper tabloid (Note: I did not specify a New York tabloid) with a picture of Lou Holtz. Here is what I received.
At least the picture resembled Holtz, but the Jets winning? And the Jets winning big? I don’t think so. But at least the “NBA Trade Rumors…” were heating up with a football helmet next to that headline. I always thought basketball was a contact sport.
So have fun with AI, but do not believe everything you read. I must admit, however, I would not have minded going to that stadium chatgpt drew. It reminded me of the old Polo Grounds.
Here are some other thoughts for the second Monday in March:
Since the Tennessee Titans fired Mike Vrabel, they are 6-28. Let’s just say coach Robert Saleh has his work cut out for him.
We are about to enter the greatest time of year for men’s and women’s college basketball.
Must be nice to be a college basketball coach and really not bat an eyelash, after being fined $25,000. Just saying.
I must say that deal the Las Vegas Raiders made, trading Maxx Crosby to the Baltimore Ravens for two first round draft choices, was a good one for both teams.
On the subject of the Raiders, that story in The Athletic about Tom Brady, who owns a minority share in the franchise, was not a flattering one, that’s for sure. The crux of the story is that Brady brought Alex Guerrero into the organization as a “wellness coordinator,” but he is viewed by many in LV as a “Brady snitch.” Remember, Guerrero was Brady’s personal trainer with the Patriots, causing a lot of discontent. Bill Belichick was not among those happy with Guerrero being around the team.
That is going to do it for today’s newsletter. Thank you for being a subscriber and have a magnificent Monday!
