A-Rod learns what it's like to be boss
Yankees collapse. Progress at Athletics stadium. Kansas St. favored over Iowa St.
Good morning, all. I hope your weekend is off to a terrific start!
Alex Rodriguez and Marc Lore are now the co-owners of the NBA’s Minnesota Timberwolves and the WNBA’s Minnesota Linx. It is intriguing to watch the first moves made by ownership.
For years A-Rod was on the other side of negotiations. Now he has to meet a bottom line. Plus, progress is being made on the Athletics new ballpark in Las Vegas. I break it all down in my latest video.
Here are some other sports stories that caught my eye for Saturday, August 23, 2025:
Here is the link to story on A’s ballpark.
Put the Yankees up against decent pitching and they fold like an accordion. After Boston’s 1-0 win over the Yanks last night, they have won seven in a row vs. their archrivals and have clinched the season series at 7-1 with five games still to play.
Since the All-Star break, the Yankees have won one more game than the Colorado Rockies.
Any notion you might be saving money via streaming is misplaced. Although it is not official, more reports are indicating ESPN will be taking over the operation of some MLB teams television rights and that could get expensive for the consumer. According to Sports Illustrated, among the rights ESPN will control will be the Minnesota Twins. Fans of the Twins would have to subscribe to ESPN’s direct-to-consumer service plus MLB.TV. Depending on which tier the fan buys the cost could be anywhere between $40-$60 per month, compared to the $19.99 per month fans are forking over now. This thing is not the slam-dunk some say it is.
Ron Turcotte R.I.P. He road Secretariat to the Triple Crown in 1973. Turcotte won more than 3,000 races in his Hall of Fame career. He died Friday morning of natural causes at his home in Canada at the age of 84.
The Orioles have signed rookie Samuel Basallo to an eight-year, $67M contract. The Red Sox have inked several of their rookies to long-term deals. Same with the Rockies, Braves and Brewers. Don’t you see what’s at play here? MLB teams are sick of doling out these deals the likes of Juan Soto, Aaron Judge, Rafael Devers, etc. The blueprint is to develop strong farm systems, ink the promising rookie(s) and after the deal expires let him (them) go and bring up the next promising rookie.
If these reports are true MLB commissioner Rob Manfred really did pull a rabbit out of his hat. Remember, this entire baseball TV negotiation scenario was the result of ESPN invoking its opt out clause. That meant baseball was out the $550M per year ESPN was paying it. Stories are now indicating ESPN is back in for the $550M per year, plus MLB is going to get $200M per from NBC for Sunday Night Baseball and another $35M from Netflix to televise the Home Run Derby contest. Now that’s a negotiation, know matter how you feel about the commish!
